Days 4-5

Days 4-5

King Haakon Bay and the Northwest Coast

Arriving at the northwest tip of South Georgia, you'll begin your exploration at the same location Sir Ernest Shackleton first made landfall in his small lifeboat after completing the now famous ocean crossing from Elephant Island 100 years ago.  From here, you'll continue around to the protected waters of the northeastern coast. The captain will navigate into the bays and harbors along the entire length of the island, pausing to explore up close by zodiac and kayak when possible.

The most anticipated site is Salisbury Plain, where black sand beaches and tussock covered dunes are home to tens of thousands of king penguins and their chicks.

Days 6-7

Days 6-7

Fortuna Bay, Stromness, Grytviken and Central North Coast

Fortuna Bay is a three-mile long and one-mile wide fjord named after the ship Fortuna, one of the original whaling expedition vessels to establish a permanent station at Grytviken further down the coast. Expect to see king penguins and elephant seals.

The focus of your journey turns to history as you continue west to Stromness and Grytviken.  From 1912 until the 1930s, Stromness operated as a whaling station. The rusted and ghostly remnants now seem out of place in such a pristine environment.  In Grytviken, the largest of the old whaling stations, you will visit the final resting place of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Days 8-9

Days 8-9

St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbor and Eastern Coast

Returning your focus back to wildlife, you'll visit St. Andrew's Bay and Gold Harbor, places teaming with fur seals, elephant seals and massive colonies of king penguins.  Coming ashore to explore on foot, you'll walk with expert guides as they point out the unique flora and fauna of the island.

At the far eastern edge of the island, you'll encounter Drygalski Fjord and the spectacular glacier calving large chunks of ice.

Day 10

Day 10

Gothul and Prion Island

Crossing back along the northern coastline, you'll stop to visit the old whaling shore depot at Gothul, and possibly hike up to a beautiful lake.

Your final stop in South Georgia will be a visit to Prion Island, which has been designated a "special protection area" for breeding colonies of Wandering Albatross. Possessing the largest wingspan of any living  bird,  Wandering Albatross spend most of their life in flight, landing only to breed and feed. This expedition is timed to coincide with their brief time in residence — a fitting way to end your visit South Georgia.
